Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg, known commonly as Paul von Hindenburg while in office, was born in Posen, Preußen (now Poznań, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland) on 2 Oct 1847. He was the son of Prussian aristocrat Hans Robert Ludwig von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg and Luise Schwickart.

Paul married Gertrud von Sperling on 24 Sep 1879 in Stettin, Pommern, Preußen and they had four children:

  1. Irmengard Pauline Louise Gertrud (von Hindenburg) von Brockhusen (1880-1948)
  2. Unnamed Infant von Hindenburg (1881)
  3. Oskar Wilhelm Robert Paul Ludwig Hellmuth von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg (1883-1960)
  4. Annemarie (von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg) von Pentz (1891-1978)

Paul von Hinderburg died on 2 Aug 1934 in Neudeck, Ostpreußen, Preußen (now Ogrodzieniec near Susz, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland).
